DUPRO and PSI are not two names for the same inspection. They happen at different points in the production cycle and give the buyer different opportunities to act.

What is DUPRO?
DUPRO means During Production Inspection.
It is carried out while an order is still being manufactured, with enough production completed for the inspector to assess what is actually coming off the line. The objective is not simply to identify defective pieces. It is to find problems early enough that the factory can correct the process before the full order is completed.
Inspection companies do not all use the same production percentage for DUPRO. QIMA describes its service as taking place once at least 20% of the order has been produced, while TÜV SÜD describes DUPRO around the 20–40% stage and Intertek describes its normal timing as around 10–15%. These are provider practices, not a universal industry rule.
In furniture production, a DUPRO inspection may look at areas such as:
- dimensions and construction against the approved specification
- materials and components being used
- workmanship and visible defects
- assembly and hardware
- finish and colour consistency
- production quantity and progress
- early packaging or packing details where applicable

The value of DUPRO is the time left in the production schedule.
Suppose a dining chair is being produced with the wrong hardware. Finding ten affected chairs during a mid-production inspection gives the factory an opportunity to identify the cause and prevent the same error from continuing through the balance of the order.
Finding the same problem after everything has been packed is a different commercial problem.
What is PSI?
PSI means Pre-Shipment Inspection.
It is normally performed after production is substantially complete and the goods are ready, or nearly ready, for shipment. In many inspection systems, PSI is also referred to as a Final Random Inspection or FRI. TÜV SÜD describes its final random inspection as taking place when the consignment is completed and packed, while HKIC describes PSI/FRI as an inspection after production and completed packaging but before shipment.
The purpose is different from DUPRO. PSI asks a final question: does the finished order that is about to ship conform to the agreed requirements?
Depending on the inspection brief, the inspector may check:
- quantity
- workmanship and appearance
- dimensions
- assembly and function
- packaging
- labels and carton markings
- product specifications
- other buyer-defined tests or requirements

A buyer can request a “DUPRO” but still get limited value if the inspection occurs too late in the production cycle. A buyer can also commission a good PSI and still have a weak quality-control system if problems were allowed to continue throughout production.
Why DUPRO can matter more for furniture than buyers expect
Furniture is not always a simple finished-product inspection. A production problem can repeat across hundreds of units because the same material, jig, hardware, finish process or assembly method is being used again and again. That makes recurring defects particularly important.
A scratch on one chair is different from a finish problem caused by the production process. A loose screw on one table is different from the factory using the wrong hardware specification on the entire order.
DUPRO gives the buyer a chance to ask the more useful question: what is causing this result, and is the same problem likely to exist in the unfinished balance of the order?
That is why during-production inspection is fundamentally a corrective-action tool, not just an early version of PSI. QIMA and Intertek both describe DUPRO in terms of identifying issues early enough for corrective measures to be taken during production.
When PSI is still essential
A buyer should not assume that a successful DUPRO makes PSI unnecessary. DUPRO examines production before the order is complete. The remaining production can still introduce defects. Packaging can also create its own problems, and the finished order may differ from what was seen earlier.
PSI gives the buyer a final check against the actual shipment. It can identify issues such as:
- final quantity differences
- defects that appeared later in production
- inconsistent finish or workmanship
- incorrect dimensions
- packaging problems
- incorrect labels or carton markings
- specification deviations in the completed order
This is especially relevant when the commercial decision is whether the shipment should move forward. The two inspections therefore work at different points in the risk chain.
Should buyers use DUPRO or PSI?
The answer depends on the production risk rather than on a universal rule.
For a straightforward repeat order with a supplier that has demonstrated reliable production performance, a buyer may place more emphasis on the final inspection.
For a new supplier, complicated furniture construction, multiple material inputs, strict dimensional requirements, or a production run where an early error could be repeated across the order, DUPRO becomes more valuable because it creates time to correct the process.
For higher-risk programs, using both can create a stronger control sequence:

An inspection is only as useful as the inspection brief behind it. Before booking DUPRO or PSI, make sure the inspection provider has the current production reference and understands exactly what the buyer wants checked.
At minimum, confirm:
- Approved reference: Which drawing, specification, sample or revision controls the inspection?
- Measurements: Which dimensions matter, and what tolerances apply?
- Defect definitions: What qualifies as critical, major or minor?
- Function: Which assembly or functional checks must be performed?
- Materials: Which wood, panel, hardware, upholstery or other components are specified?
- Finish: What colour, gloss, texture or surface standard is being used?
- Packaging: What carton, protection, assembly and labeling requirements apply?
- Sampling: What sampling method and acceptance criteria will be used?
- Timing: How much production must be available before the inspection creates useful evidence?
- Corrective action: What happens when a problem is found?

AQL is one possible sampling methodology, but it should not be confused with a guarantee that an entire shipment is defect-free.
